Prayer and liturgy are at the heart of daily life at St. Augustine’s, providing opportunities for pupils to encounter Christ, deepen their relationship with God and respond to His presence in their lives. In keeping with our diocesan vision to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, and our school mission, we journey hand in hand as we listen to God’s call, learn from God’s Word and share God’s love through service. Prayer is a natural and valued part of our school day, enabling children and adults to experience moments of reflection, stillness, praise, thanksgiving and joyful celebration.
Our prayer and liturgy are carefully planned and rooted in Scripture, the liturgical year and the traditions of the Catholic Church. Pupils experience a rich variety of ways to pray and are supported to participate with reverence, confidence and understanding. As they progress through the school, children have increasing opportunities to prepare, lead and reflect upon prayer and liturgy, developing their ability to make meaningful choices about Scripture, prayer, music, symbols and responses. The celebration of the Eucharist holds a special place in our worship, and our close relationship with the parish enables pupils, staff, families and parishioners to come together regularly in prayer and celebration.
Through prayer and liturgy, we encourage pupils not only to listen to God’s Word but to consider how it calls them to respond. Opportunities for reflection help children make connections between Scripture, prayer and their own lives, so that worship can inspire meaningful action. In this way, listening to God’s call and learning from God’s Word can lead our children to share God’s love through service, showing hope, compassion and a commitment to justice in the choices they make and the way they respond to others.
Our aim is that prayer and liturgy at St. Augustine’s are engaging, prayerful and deeply meaningful experiences in which pupils are active participants. Through regular opportunities to pray, lead, respond and reflect, children develop the confidence and understanding to make prayer their own and recognise its importance in their continuing journey of faith.
